If you tend to run warm as you catch some zzz’s, you may have already tried a few products for hot sleepers. In addition to outfitting your bed with cooling products, one of the best things you can do to banish night sweats is purchase a cooling mattress that’s specially designed for hot sleepers. The best mattresses help pull heat away from the body, allowing for a cooler, more restful night’s sleep.

We’ve tried dozens of mattresses in hopes of finding the best of the best. Our editors and testers have run the gamut from popular models to high-tech options, like the Eight Sleep Mattress System, and everything in between. One option that we love after months of testing is the Cocoon Chill Mattress.

Sealy makes Cocoon’s Chill Mattress collection, which happens to be Cocoon’s bestselling collection. In order to find out whether or not it lives up to the hype, Shopping Editor Mary Henn volunteered to test it out in her home. Here’s what she had to say about its cooling capabilities, comfort and other factors.

What is the Cocoon Chill mattress?

Cocoon Chill MattressMARY HENN/RD.COM

The Cocoon Chill mattress collection by Sealy consists of two mattresses: The Chill Memory Foam, a 10-inch memory foam mattress, and The Chill Hybrid, a 12-inch hybrid mattress made of memory foam and coil springs (or innerspring) for added support and comfort. Both models have a medium feel and include a cooling cover that absorbs and dissipates heat.

Henn opted for The Chill Hybrid. This model is made up of four layers: a cool-to-the-touch cover which absorbs and dissipates heat, memory foam which adapts to your body and helps relieve pressure points and increase airflow, cushioning foam which reduces motion transfer and a layer of over 900 fabric-encased coils for extra support and airflow at the bottom. This layer also boasts increased edge support in the form of a steel perimeter.

The Chill Hybrid comes in six different sizes and can be paired with a platform bed, a flat foundation or an adjustable base. It’s not designed to be placed on the floor. In fact, placing this mattress on the floor can cause moisture to become trapped underneath the mattress, causing damage and may even invalidate your warranty. The manufacturer also states that this mattress is incompatible with a box spring, though Henn opted to use one anyway. “I think [the box spring] helps it keep its shape,” she writes in her full review.

How we tested it

Henn is no stranger to testing out the latest and greatest mattresses. In fact, she recently tested the Purple Restore Cool Touch Hybrid mattress. Unlike the Purple Restore mattress, which required a scheduled delivery, Henn had The Chill mattress delivered right to her front door. It arrived vacuum-sealed in a slender black box, and she was able to move into the house on her own. After she got it inside, her partner was on hand to help with the heavy lifting.

Henn was immediately impressed by how easy it was to set up her new Chill mattress. “It took just 30 minutes to inflate and be ready for use. Typically, boxed mattresses take 24 to 72 hours to fully puff up and be ready for a night’s sleep,” she writes. “I was able to start using my new Cocoon mattress the night I unboxed it.”

As someone who suffers from chronic back pain, Henn needs a mattress that’s a bit on the firmer side with more support. And while she’s found other mattresses to be comfortable initially, she’s been disappointed in their ability to provide her with a comfortable night’s sleep. Luckily for Henn, The Chill did not disappoint.

“I did have a better time on the Cocoon Chill. It’s the best boxed mattress I’ve tried,” she raves. Henn explains that the mattress does a good job of keeping her spine aligned, which helps prevent aches and pains in her lower back. She attributes this to the mattress’s mix of memory foam and coils, which she feels provides more support than other mattresses she’s tried. “My old mattress was providing zero relief,” she writes. “Additionally, the mattress’s high-motion absorbance keeps me from waking up abruptly every time I turn over in the night.”

Both Henn and her partner noticed that the bed doesn’t feel hot and stuffy when they climb into it each night. However, she points out that once the mattress was covered with a mattress topper, sheets and blankets, she didn’t notice much of a cooling effect. If you’re a very hot sleeper, you may want to purchase a cooling mattress pad along with cooling bed sheets and blankets, and even a cooling comforter.

Pros:

  • Cool-to-the-touch cover
  • Combination of memory foam and coils for comfort and support
  • Medium-firm feel
  • Inflates in just 30 minutes
  • Arrives compressed, making it easier to deliver and move
  • 12-inch height
  • Doesn’t require a box spring
  • 100-night trial period
  • 10-year limited warranty

Cons:

  • Cooling effect wasn’t as noticeable once bedding covered the mattress
  • May be too firm for some
