I’ve always been a hot sleeper, so now that I’m five months pregnant and constantly surrounded by my furry friends in bed, this problem has increasingly gotten worse. I knew I needed to upgrade to a bigger bed and something much cooler. When I had the chance to test the GhostBed Luxe mattress, I knew I had to act fast. I can confidently say that this cooling mattress was the right choice for us, and it couldn’t have happened at a better time.
When my husband and I met, I had one dog who bonded us. My senior boy has never slept alone a day in his life, so when we got our second pup four years later, I was determined to keep us all together for a better night’s rest. I soon found out our old, hot, queen-size mattress wouldn’t be a long-term possibility, especially since discovering the exciting news we are expecting our first child in February. Going from just the three of us to now almost a family of five, I knew I had to make the upgrade. Here’s my honest GhostBed Luxe mattress review.
GhostBed has been around since the early 1900s and has 100 years of experience under its belt. The GhostBed Luxe launched in October 2017, and the brand has deemed it “The Coolest Bed in the World” with patented core and surface cooling technology. Upon first taking it out of the box, the mattress was plush and even cool to the touch.
GhostBed has three different collections—Essential, Luxury and Premium—with 10 different mattresses to choose from. The GhostBed Luxe is a part of the Luxury Collection, which has a mid-tier price point and is the most popular mattress in this category, as detailed by the company. There are a variety of sizes, ranging from a twin to a California king.

The defining trait of the GhostBed Luxe is the cool-to-touch quilted cover combined with patented cooling technology. The mattress measures 13 inches high and features a contouring gel memory foam that gives it a “spring-like” feel. The GhostBed Luxe is ideal for side and back sleepers who like a medium feel to their mattresses and, of course, those who have found themselves using a bed cooling system in the past because they sleep hot. The gel memory foam helps relieve pressure points and alleviates back pain while simultaneously giving you a luxurious comfort feel.
The GhostBed Luxe is broken into seven different layers to provide the best comfort and a cool night’s rest. The first layer on top is the signature Ghost Ice cover, with its cool-to-touch feel and plush top. The second and third layers are made up of a half inch of cooling fiber and a full inch of gel memory foam. Directly beneath the quilted cover is the fourth layer with additional Ghost Ice technology, ensuring you stay cool by absorbing your body heat throughout the night and pulling it away. The fifth layer contains another 2 inches of memory foam, helping contour to your body for pressure relief and motion isolation. The last two layers consist of 2 inches of Ghost Bounce foam and 7.5 inches of high-density base foam to allow a luxurious, yet sturdy, feel. With seven layers of crafted technology, you can rest easy knowing you’re making an investment that’ll last.
When testing the GhostBed Luxe mattress, I considered four important areas: sizing, delivery, company policies and comfort.
This cooling mattress is available in a range of sizes: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king and split king. I used to sleep on a queen, but decided to upgrade to a king since I was getting a new mattress anyway. If you’re upgrading like I did, consider that you’ll need all new sheets, comforters, duvets, pillows, etc. I didn’t fully think this through until after ordering the mattress and new bed frame. But a nice feature on the GhostBed website is that you can directly add new sheets, pillows, pillowcases and a protector to your order, so you don’t have to worry about it later like I did.
The GhostBed Luxe took a little over a week to arrive, which was quick in my book. However, I never saw a delivery person or was contacted about when it would be delivered. One day, it just showed up! I’m happy about how quickly I received it, but the box it came in looked pretty beat up. It was broken at the seams in some places, and there were a fair number of tears on the cardboard box. Luckily, it was vacuum-sealed in plastic, and it was all intact. We were leaving for the weekend to visit family out of state when we got it, so we decided to take it out of the plastic and left it out over the few days we were gone to inflate and air out.
GhostBed’s got some helpful policies that make testing out your mattress and returns easy. The brand prides itself on fast delivery, claiming many customers receive their mattresses within two to five days after placing their order. They promised to deliver it right to your door, which rang true for my delivery and was a bonus considering it was fairly heavy to move. Plus, GhostBed has a 101-night sleep trial, so by testing it out for at least 30 days and returning it before 101 days, you’ll get your money back. When I took the mattress out of its plastic, it was immediately cool to the touch, as it claimed, so I had high hopes for the cooling effect at night. After we got back from our trip and set up the new bed, my first reaction to laying on it was that it was a bit firmer than I was expecting. I don’t like a super-soft mattress and want to get up easily in the mornings, but I also don’t like something rock-hard. I think this mattress rings true to a “medium” firmness. After about a month of use, it was broken into a bit more and felt less firm. By the end of the month, I was loving this bed and the way it feels.
The cooling technology truly was cool to the touch, but after adding our mattress protector and sheets, I felt like this was lost a little bit. I think if you were to pair this with some cooling sheets and a cooling mattress protector, the effect would come back through more strongly. However, I still did notice a difference in the cooling effect compared to our old mattress. My husband is 6 feet and 6 inches tall, so having the extra room of a king bed for him and our two dogs was ideal. Plus, the cooling feature and medium firmness made me feel more well-rested than ever. Now, I don’t dread getting up in the mornings anymore because I feel like I got enough zzz’s. The highlight of my day is coming home to a freshly made bed, and snuggling up with my husband and two pups.

The Luxe is the brand’s most cooling, and the Venus Williams Legend (yes, named after that Venus Williams!) is also top-tier in the cooling department. The Venus Williams Legend has medium-firm firmness and is an inch lower at 12 inches tall. It promotes faster muscle recovery and better sleep.
Casper has its cooling collection, which is made up of the Snow and Snow Max mattresses. The Snow has a medium firmness, and the Snow Max, which is more expensive, has a medium soft feel. Both are made up of a contouring memory foam and have a conforming feel.
While GhostBed offers a 101-night sleep trial and a 25-year limited warranty, Casper has a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year limited warranty. GhostBed appears to cost a bit more, however, its frequent sales (at the time of publication, the Luxe was over $1,000 off) make it even cheaper than Casper’s cooling offerings.
It all comes down to personal preference, so I suggest looking at the mattresses’ materials and layers to see what will work for you.
If you’re looking for a high-end mattress that’ll hold up to its claims, the GhostBed Luxe doesn’t disappoint. Not only is this mattress durable and well-made, but it’s also extremely comfortable and cooling. There’s a reason it’s dubbed The Coolest Bed in the World! Beyond that, the gel memory foam can help with aches and pains for an overall better night’s sleep. Take it from me—after a month of testing this mattress, my family fell in love with it more and more every night.
