Replacing an old, saggy mattress is one of the best things you can do to improve your sleep. But shopping for a new one can be a bit overwhelming. After all, the best mattresses are an investment and you want to be sure you’re going to love what you buy long after it’s delivered to your home. Over the years, we’ve reviewed dozens of the most popular mattresses on the market, including Sealy Posturepedic, Bear Mattress, Helix and Saatva. Another option that we love—for its cooling capabilities and hybrid build—is the Purple Restore mattress.

This Purple mattress is available exclusively at Mattress Firm, one of the largest mattress retailers in the US. And since we already know that Purple makes one of the best mattresses you can buy on Amazon, we couldn’t wait to get our hands on this special line. Keep reading for our editor’s full review of the Purple Restore Cool Touch hybrid mattress and all of the product details you should know before you order one for yourself.

What is the Purple Restore mattress?

The Purple Restore mattress is a cooling mattress that’s made up of five layers: the SoftFlex Cool Touch Cover with antimicrobial properties on top, the 2-inch patented GelFlex Grid, edge support foam, comfort foam and 8 inches of responsive CoolFlex Coils at the bottom. The combination of foam and coils is what makes it a true hybrid mattress.

The Restore comes in five sizes, though, unlike other mattresses in the Restore collection, you cannot choose between a soft or firm feel. This model just has a medium firmness. The mattresses in the Restore collection are also designed to pair with an adjustable base or can be placed directly on a platform—no box spring required!

The mattress is designed for all sleep positions, temperatures and pain levels. Its cool-to-the-touch yarn gives an instant cooling sensation at the surface of the mattress, which may mean you don’t need a bed cooling system or cooling mattress pad or topper after all. The patented GelFlex Grid adapts to your body and helps alleviate stiffness, aches and pains and sleep apnea by distributing pressure evenly across the entire mattress. And finally, motion separation helps to relieve additional pressure on your shoulders, hips and back while reducing any movement you might feel as your partner moves throughout the night. The entire mattress is also hypoallergenic, making it a smart choice for allergy sufferers.

How we tested it

Purple Restore Cool Touch Hybrid MattressMARY HENN/RD.COM

Mary Henn, shopping editor, volunteered to test this mattress in her own home and has been sleeping on it every night for the last eight months. She ordered a king size, and because it was coming from Mattress Firm, she had to schedule a home delivery. It’s worth noting that Mattress Firm offers free delivery, but if you’d like them to set it up for you and haul away your old mattress, there’s an additional fee. Once her mattress was delivered, Henn placed it on a standard metal bed frame from Amazon before removing the airtight plastic and unrolling it.

Since this mattress is vacuum sealed for shipping, Henn had to allow it time to inflate and take shape. A Purple representative advised her that it takes just a few hours for the mattress to expand to a point it could be slept on, though it could take up to two days for the mattress to fully take shape. Henn waited four hours before climbing into her new bed.

In her detailed review, Henn points out that the mattress was cool to the touch and describes it as being akin to a moisture-wicking athletic tee, only softer. And as someone who prefers to sink into a soft, cushiony mattress, she appreciated how the top layer of this mattress gave way when she sat down. Her partner, on the other hand, prefers a firmer mattress. Luckily, this mattress proved to be the best of both worlds: plush and cushiony on the top, yet firm and supportive on the bottom.

After a month of sleeping on the Purple Restore Mattress, Henn and her partner found their sleep to be much improved. “Yes, my partner and I have more room (we upgraded from a queen mattress to a king), but I also find myself tossing and turning less in the night and falling asleep faster when I lay down,” she writes in her review.

Though she initially loved her new Purple Restore mattress, after six or seven months of sleeping on it, Henn ultimately decided that it’s a little too soft for her. As someone who suffers from chronic back pain, she feels that a firmer mattress with more support is best suited for her. That’s not to say, however, that she doesn’t recommend this mattress. “The Restore might be great for someone who prefers a softer mattress with more give to it,” she says.
