8 Things You Didn’t Know About McDonald’s New Grandma McFlurry

Updated: May 30, 2024

Remember the butterscotch candy in your grandma's purse? This new McFlurry just might be better.

Remember those sweet, delicious hard butterscotch candies Grandma used to pull out of her purse? McDonald’s apparently does. Inspired by Grandma’s sweet tooth (and a serious dose of nostalgia), the fast-food chain has unleashed a tasty new McFlurry called the Grandma McFlurry, a butterscotch-flavored dessert meant to represent every grandmother’s favorite flavored candy.

As of May 21, the limited-edition McFlurry (served in a special cup) is available to order—just make sure the ice cream machines are actually working. So whether you’re a fan of Werther’s-like candies or you’re craving some drive-thru memories, here’s what you need to know about the new McDonald’s butterscotch-flavored Grandma McFlurry.

1. The Grandma McFlurry has its own syrup and mix-ins

Unlike the other McDonald’s McFlurries made with only one mix-in, this special-edition treat is blended with two tasty ingredients: Grandma McFlurry syrup and Grandma McFlurry crumbles. (More on both below.) The result is a mustard-colored soft serve speckled with crunchy crumbles.

2. Butterscotch crumbles are mixed throughout

Did your grandma love toffee and caramel candies? If so, she’d approve of the butterscotch crumbles; each McFlurry has two to three scoops mixed in. But while butterscotch candies (like Werther’s) are meant to be sucked on, these candy bits are crunchy, easy to eat and don’t get hard in the ice cream.

3. Butterscotch syrup is blended into the soft-serve

Two pumps of the syrup are blended in smoothly with the ice cream (one of McDonald’s bestselling menu items), so you can get the extra-sweet butterscotch taste with every bite.

4. Seniors were some of the first to try the Grandma McFlurry

This sweet treat was unveiled in Grandma’s McFlurry Mobile (McDonald’s take on an ice cream truck), which made stops at senior centers and assisted-living homes in New York City, to share the McFlurry with grandparents across the city. McDonald’s said it would also make donations to Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly to support older adults experiencing isolation and loneliness.

5. The Grandma McFlurry is served in its own special-edition cup

The McFlurry comes in a limited-edition pink cup, with “xoxo, Grandma” written in a black scrawl on the side. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with those famously recognizable McFlurry spoons, which were discontinued in 2023 in an effort for McDonald’s to become more sustainable.

6. You can adjust the toppings

While this isn’t necessarily a secret McDonald’s employees won’t tell you, you can add additional McFlurry toppings and syrup if you’d like. In the mood for chocolate? Add in crushed Oreos or extra hot fudge. Or how about some caramel? You can even double-down on Grandma McFlurry crumbles when you order.

7. The Grandma McFlurry will be available only for a limited time

This summertime treat will be available only while supplies last, so be sure to grab a cup before it’s gone!

8. McDonald’s is reimagining two hit songs for the occasion

For added nostalgia, McDonald’s is partnering with two musicians to reimagine two hit songs for the launch of the Grandma McFlurry. Singer-songwriter Remi Wolf is covering the classic song “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You).” And Puerto Rican star Jay Wheeler has created a cover of the iconic Latin song “Piel Canela.” Both are available on all music platforms.
