Zodiac Signs’ Colors: What Is Yours, and What Does It Mean?

Updated: Jul. 03, 2024

Need a pick-me-up? Use your zodiac sign's color to boost your inner power.

Certain hues can’t help but make an impression: Fire engine red demands attention, while black commands respect and sky blue soothes. Surrounding yourself with specific colors is a tried-and-true tactic, whether you’re dressing for success or painting your home a tranquil shade that’ll help you snooze. But it never hurts to hold your zodiac sign in mind when incorporating particular colors into your daily life. After all, the zodiac signs’ colors can help us be our best selves.

Just as your zodiac sign is associated with a certain element (water, fire, earth or air) and symbol (like the ram or the scorpion), it’s also linked to hues that speak to your energy, strengths and distinct characteristics. These colors not only mirror your sign’s key traits and personality but, when integrated into your surroundings, can enhance your inner power, confidence and sense of self too.

As an astrologer of over a decade, I urge you to use zodiac colors to maximize your or your loved ones’ well-being. How? In my book Raising Baby by the Stars: A New Parent’s Guide to Astrology, I share the colors that you might want to think about weaving into your child’s nursery design to reflect and appeal to their unique astrological profile. But selecting the best paint color for your home is just one way to put the zodiac signs’ colors to good use.

Whether you’re curating a bedroom palette to support a sense of security, creating an office aesthetic to maximize your success or putting together a wardrobe that best reflects and enhances aspects of your personality, you’d do well to consider zodiac colors. Ahead, I’ll reveal the colors that suit you best, based on your astrology.

Aries (March 21–April 19): Reds and primary colors

Given that Aries is the cardinal fire sign and ruled by Mars—the planet of action, energy and motivation—it should come as no surprise that the ram is associated with bright, bold, primary colors. Mars also appears reddish from a distance, which may be why the passionate hue is most frequently associated with the dynamic sign. But Aries’s color goes beyond basic red. From scarlet to crimson, cherry to burgundy, all shades reflect and can help fuel Aries’s go-getter, competitive, initiative-taking nature.

And because Aries is the first sign (aka the “baby”) of the zodiac, the other primary colors that we associate with childhood, like bright yellow and royal blue, mirror and can support the wide-eyed, playful side of people born under this sign.

Taurus (April 20–May 20): Green

Ruled by Venus, the planet of romance, art and beauty, Taurus is the fixed earth sign, symbolized by the bull. Innately deliberate, pragmatic, steadfast, slow and steady, people born under the second sign of the zodiac can’t help but be especially in tune with all five senses. They’re mindful and practical, which brings to mind the grounded hue green, reminiscent of our planet’s most verdant terrain, from forests to grassy meadows. Taureans, who feel especially content when spending time in nature, can channel this feeling and a greater sense of security by wearing or surrounding themselves with green.

Gemini (May 21–June 20): Yellow

The mutable air sign, symbolized by the twins and ruled by messenger Mercury (the planet of communication, transportation and technology), is buzzy, curious, social, quick-witted and often dualistic. Their natural-born penchant for soaking up information at every turn and moving through life at a zippy, cerebral, youthful pace goes hand in hand with yellow’s playful tone. The hue of joyful sunflowers and tart, bright pineapples supports Geminis’ upbeat, on-the-go nature and lighthearted approach to life that often sees them living for meeting and greeting others and flitting from one interest to the next.

Cancer (June 21–July 22): Deep ocean blues

The cardinal water sign, Cancer is ruled by the moon, which oversees intuition, nurturing, emotions and security in astrology and has an undeniable effect on the tides. Fittingly, this sign’s signature hues are those of the vast sea. Royal blue, teal and cerulean are not only reflective of Cancer’s characteristics—the sign of the crab is known for being sentimental, heartfelt, loving and sometimes a bit moody—but also help them feel even more at ease when wading through complex emotions. After all, ocean blues can’t help but be soothing and remind us that, like the ocean’s temperament, emotions can shift and change quite frequently. And that is more than OK.

Leo (July 23–Aug. 22): Orange and gold

A fixed fire sign, Leo is ruled by the confident sun, which presides over identity, confidence and self-image. That’s why the passionate, assertive sign is associated with gold and orange—and really any gilded or warm, sunny color, including coral, honey and bronze. Not only do these colors bring to mind the symbol of the sign itself (the lion), but they also emulate Leo’s regal, confident, upbeat and fiercely loyal personality.

Whether they’re gravitating to yellow gold jewelry or bringing these blazing colors into their beauty routines or wardrobes, Leos feel even more centered, warmhearted and prepared to command the spotlight when incorporating these zodiac power colors into their world.

Virgo (Aug. 23–Sept. 22): Brown

Ruled by Mercury, this mutable earth sign tends to be a pragmatic lover of language with a knack for keying into details and a desire to be of service to others, particularly by gathering information. These salt-of-the-earth traits reflect brown tones like chestnut, cedar and walnut—all of which happen to be types of wood considered stable and rock solid … just like Virgo’s nature.

People born under this sign can be worriers at times. But by bringing these grounding, soothing tones into their surroundings, they can amplify their centeredness and, in turn, self-esteem.

Libra (Sept. 23–Oct. 22): Pink and lavender

The cardinal air sign, ruled by sweet Venus (the planet of relationships, beauty and values), Libra is keenly interested in cultivating balance and infusing everyday moments with romance and harmony. As the zodiac signs’ colors go, Libra’s are straightforward: The sign of the scales is associated with rosy, lovey-dovey pink and lavender.

Both whimsical hues feel as peaceful and as social as Libras, who are known for enjoying the company of others and being eager to serve as the host with the most. Donning clothing or reveling in surroundings that feature these colors can magnify Libra’s lighthearted and airy partnership-oriented personality.

Scorpio (Oct. 23–Nov. 21): Black and jewel tones

Go-getter Mars, the planet of action and energy, and powerful Pluto, the planet of transformation, co-rule this emotionally intelligent, intuitive, mysterious, fearless and family-oriented water sign. Pursuing intimacy is a top priority for a Scorpio, so it’s no wonder the sign is associated with equally rich, gratifying jewel tones like amethyst and aubergine.

Black is also one of Scorpio’s signature zodiac colors—and not just because it brings to mind the sign’s symbol (a scorpion, naturally). It’s also the hue we most associate with permanence (think: ink on a contract), something that, as a fixed sign, Scorpio truly values.

People born under this sign can infuse their wardrobes, homes and accessories with these colors to bolster their sense of inner power and security.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22–Dec. 21): Purple

The mutable fire sign is ruled by lucky, magnifying Jupiter, the planet of abundance. Sagittarians are exuberant, adventurous, full of wanderlust and philosophical, and they prefer to go big or go home. That tendency to appear and command a presence that’s larger than life fits beautifully with velvety, lush, equally over-the-top purple, a color that has long been associated with opulence, royalty and enlightenment. It’s also a truly creative and bold color that speaks to—and supports—Sagittarius’s independent, go-getter nature and flair for diving into uncharted waters and shooting from the hip.

Integrating more purple into their personal style or surroundings can fuel an even greater feeling of jubilation for the sign of the archer.

Capricorn (Dec. 22–Jan. 19): Charcoal gray

Ruled by taskmaster Saturn, the planet of hard work, commitment and responsibility, the cardinal earth sign is pragmatic, diligent, wise, serious and industrious. Capricorns’ nonstop, nose-to-the-grindstone work ethic is downright enviable and a major career strength. So it’s no surprise that the sign of the sea goat is associated with neutral, functional charcoal gray. The strong hue, which brings to mind minimalism and professionalism, speaks to Capricorn’s desire to pinpoint a rational goal and then take slow, steady steps toward achievement, recognition and status. Infusing their wardrobes, offices and homes with the sensible color can go far in helping Capricorns feel more determined than ever to come out on top.

Aquarius (Jan. 20–Feb. 18): Silver and airy blues

This fixed air sign, co-ruled by electrifying Uranus and boundary-setting Saturn, is friendly, a bit quirky, group-oriented and often happy to play the contrarian. Given just how science-minded, inventive and tech savvy people born under this sign happen to be, there’s no better Aquarius color than futuristic, shimmery silver, which mirrors their forward-thinking point of view. In fact, Aquarians gravitate toward silver or white-gold jewelry and clothes because the color coordinates so well with their MO.

As the sign of the water bearer, Aquarius is also empowered by light blues like periwinkle, cyan and sky blue—shades that inspire them to stand strong in their amiable but cool-headed nature. These hues also bring to mind the vast, airy sky under which we all must coexist, something that matters deeply to this humanitarian sign.

Pisces (Feb. 19–March 20): Turquoise and indigo

The mutable water sign Pisces is deeply empathic, emotional, psychic, escapist and invested in both self-healing and the healing of others. Co-ruled by fortunate Jupiter, the planet of expansion, this zodiac sign’s colors are blue-green, seafoam and turquoise, a color associated with abundance, protection and good luck. These free-spirited yet comforting hues can bolster a sensitive Piscean’s sense of security and well-being.

Similarly, indigo, a color that correlates to spirituality and intuition, is also a perfect fit for the sign of the fish. That’s because this water sign is also ruled by Neptune, the planet of dreams and mysticism. Both of this zodiac sign’s colors benefit Pisceans’ tender spirit and confidence.
