Your zodiac sign’s new favorite hobby
Searching for something new, interesting and fun to fill your time? Look to the stars. Each of the zodiac signs comes with its own set of strengths, weaknesses and interests, so using your sun sign to find a hobby makes perfect sense. I’m a Cancer, for instance, and we’re known for being homemakers. So my ideal zodiac sign hobbies are things like quilting and cooking, right?
“Actually, no,” says Emily Ridout, a professional astrologer and author. “Focusing on the stereotypical strengths of your sign runs the risk of turning your hobby into work or burning you out. You want to find a hobby that will help you achieve balance in your life and be grounding to you.”
How do you do that? “Look to the opposite sign of your sun sign to determine the best hobby for you,” she says. The zodiac signs come in pairs with opposing traits, so doing a hobby that blends characteristics of your sun sign with traits from its opposite, sometimes called its sister sign, will complement your strengths, bringing you greater fulfillment, learning, peace and fun—big emphasis on fun. When choosing a hobby, the top consideration should be your interest and enjoyment; don’t become a slave to your star chart, she adds. (That’s good news for me: I hate quilting, and cooking brings me zero joy.)
To learn more about zodiac sign hobbies, I asked Ridout and astrologer Julie Reed, founder of the Art of Astrology, to share their expert advice. Below, you’ll find your sun sign, its opposite sign and the perfect hobby for you.

Aries (March 21–April 19): Join a hiking club
Opposite sign: Libra
Courageous and determined—with an enviable amount of confidence—Aries excels at physical challenges. So breaking a sweat is a natural fit for this fire sign when it’s time to unwind and de-stress. But don’t start puzzling out the best workout for your zodiac sign just yet! People whose sun sign is Aries need to look to the opposite sign, Libra, first. It’ll help them balance out their drive and energy by prioritizing physical activity that isn’t competitive or too intense, Ridout says.
“Aries hobbies will draw on the social strengths normally associated with Libra, so look for gentle movement that you can do with a buddy or in a group,” she says. Join a hiking, jogging or mountain-biking club. Or sign up for a fun group fitness class, like cardio dance or kettlebells.
Taurus (April 20–May 20): Do yoga
Opposite sign: Scorpio
Taureans are very aesthetically aware and are naturally drawn to beauty, fashion and art, though their steadiness and analytical natures make them naturals in finance and business. They often work in one of these industries, so having a hobby in the same area will only burn them out, Ridout says.
“Draw on the quiet energy of Scorpio’s depth, intensity and mystery to find Taurus hobbies that follow your interests but bring a deeper awareness,” she says. This includes beautiful and spiritual activities like yoga, guided meditation and art projects that are personally meaningful—such as painting a picture that reflects your feelings rather than trying to copy a painting you see online.
Gemini (May 21–June 20): Learn a new language
Opposite sign: Sagittarius
“Geminis are often geniuses,” Ridout says. “They know a little about a lot of things, which makes people assume they already have a lot of hobbies, but this isn’t necessarily the case because this knowledge can be superficial.” To complement a love of learning and balance out a tendency to bounce from one thing to the next, people born under this intelligent zodiac sign should look to Sagittarius, she says.
Sagittarians love to travel and dive deeply into other cultures, so the ideal Gemini hobbies will combine their need for intellectual stimulation with the inspiration to learn a lot about a particular culture. One way to do that is by learning another language, Reed says. Their positive energy, coupled with their curious natures and love of exchanging ideas, makes learning a new language a joyful pursuit for people with this air sign. It helps that Geminis are also the chattiest of all the star signs, Reed adds.
Cancer (June 21–July 22): Take up photography
Opposite sign: Capricorn
Cancers are highly imaginative, “but they also like to see immediate results,” says Reed. They are naturally drawn to nurturing and homemaking, so ideal Cancer hobbies will balance that by taking a page from adventurous Capricorn and getting out of the home, Ridout adds.
While artistic pursuits generally suit this water sign well, photography might be the best fit when it comes to pitch-perfect zodiac sign hobbies. It offers the best of both worlds, forcing Cancers to go outside and take pictures of beautiful things they see in nature or to take a photography class. Bonus: You can frame and hang your favorite photographs as artwork in your home. Other artful activities outside the home include painting, taking a pottery or jewelry-making class, or building a sculpture.
Leo (July 23—Aug. 22): Volunteer with a community theater
Opposite sign: Aquarius
“Leos are more concerned with happiness than with finances,” says Reed. They have their priorities in order, and they also have their passions. But while they tend to be very creative, they sometimes get too sucked in to their personal interests.
Ridout suggests finding balance by taking a page from outgoing Aquarius and adding an element of volunteering to your hobby. For instance, volunteering to assist a community theater will scratch your itch for creativity while also helping you find fulfillment in helping others, she says. “Plus, Leos love an audience!” Ridout says. Not a theater kid? Other strong Leo hobbies include serving on the board of an art museum or organizing a weekly neighborhood pickleball tournament.
Virgo (Aug. 23–Sept. 22): Learn to bake
Opposite sign: Pisces
Virgos might be shy, but they don’t shy away from hard work. “Anything they do, they do to perfection,” says Reed. They’re also very detail oriented, Ridout adds.
Pisces, the opposite of Virgo, complements these gifts with a great sense of taste and practicality. Baking, with its tweaking and fine-tuning of a recipe to yield the perfect pastries, combines the best of both signs, Ridout says. So go ahead and indulge—not only in a new hobby but also in some zodiac-appropriate desserts, straight from your oven. Other Virgo hobbies that may be a good fit include taking part in wine tastings or tea ceremonies.
Libra (Sept. 23–Oct. 22): Lead a book club
Opposite sign: Aries
As social butterflies, Libras often have long lists of friends, thanks to their cooperative and diplomatic natures. But these gracious qualities can also make them prone to following the crowd, leading them to hobbies they don’t necessarily enjoy, Ridout says. Borrow some of Aries’s fire energy and drive to be a leader when picking a hobby.
A social activity you’re truly interested in that offers an opportunity to take the lead is an ideal Libra hobby, she says. Depending on your personal interests, you could do anything from captain a kickball team to lead a hiking expedition. Leading a book club is a great pick for Libras who love to read—especially if they can get their pals to join the group (and maybe even pick the book genre based on the zodiac).
Scorpio (Oct. 23–Nov. 21): Grow a garden
Opposite sign: Taurus
“Scorpios are ambitious and need freedom and space,” Reed says. Ridout adds that they are often caught up in their vivid inner worlds, focusing on mental pursuits like spirituality or philosophy. They can get so caught up in their thoughts that a little balance from earth sign Taurus’s tangible worldly interests is exactly what they need, Ridout says.
Scorpios’ ultimate hobbies will ground them in the real world, involve doing something tangible and honor their need for space. Whether planting flowers, vegetables, herbs or some combination, gardening will hit all those marks, and Scorpios will feel deeply fulfilled when those seeds start to bloom. Other good Scorpio hobbies include sewing, creating pottery or woodworking.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22–Dec. 21): Keep a travel journal
Opposite sign: Gemini
Sagittarians are great explorers and love traveling far and wide. This can get exhausting, however, so a good hobby will provide balance by keeping them closer to their home base, Ridout says. Geminis provide a nice complement to this adventurous side with their love of learning new things. To keep your hobby relaxing, try these twists on your zodiac sign’s typical vacation: Explore your local area or go on adventures closer to home. You could visit local museums, walk along nearby nature trails or take a local class to learn something new.
One combo Ridout suggests is travel blogging or journaling. Chronicling your adventures will let you relive your greatest experiences while stimulating your intellectual side. Even if travel isn’t your thing, journaling about your life or writing creatively (think: poems or fiction) will be rewarding. And who knows, perhaps you will turn your journal into a memoir someday!
Capricorn (Dec. 22–Jan. 19): Take up water sports
Opposite sign: Cancer
Disciplined and self-reliant, Capricorns are uniquely suited to learning and mastering a craft, which makes them great at lots of different activities. They’re also very motivated to do hobbies—people with this earth sign like to take charge and be their own leaders. But while it may be a career strength, this intense drive can quickly turn a Capricorn’s hobbies into second (or third) jobs. “Hobbies should be rejuvenating, not exhausting,” Ridout says.
She recommends balancing your drive by adding some Cancer-inspired self-nurturing elements to your hobby. “Anything that gets you in a calming environment, particularly around water, will be soothing and rejuvenating,” she says. These Capricorn hobbies could range from hiking around a lake or pond to visiting a nature preserve or doing a water sport like swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking or paddleboarding.
Aquarius (Jan. 20–Feb. 18): Play pickleball
Opposite sign: Leo
Aquarians are innovative and skilled at thinking outside the box, two great qualities to bring to trying a new hobby. This group isn’t afraid to get out of their comfort zone, especially if they think that learning this hobby will help them in some way in the future, Ridout says. Leos, on the other hand, are more focused on the here and now, and they’re very creative. Combining your adventurous spirit with a Leo-like focus on creativity in the present will help you feel peaceful, she says.
Sports are uniquely suited to challenge you, teach you new things and keep you focused on the present. The key is to try something you’ve never done before. Pickleball is a relatively new sport and lots of fun, making it a top choice. (Other Aquarius hobbies include dancing socially and playing dodgeball.) You don’t have to pick a group activity, though. Aquarians thrive both in groups and alone, so if you prefer a solitary sport, you could try archery, swimming or rock climbing.
Pisces (Feb. 19–March 20): Host intimate dinner parties
Opposite sign: Virgo
“Pisces are always thinking of others and willing to communicate,” Reed says. This makes them very altruistic, helpful and great listeners. Unbalanced, this can make Pisces feel overwhelmed in social situations. A great way for them to get their social time in while feeling safe is to pick a hobby that involves an event they can host.
Take a page from Virgo’s focus on detail and exquisite taste, and host a cocktail hour, dinner party or murder-mystery party, Ridout says. If that feels like too much, have a few friends over to create cocktails (or mocktails) or to play board games.
